XWP Minisode 05 - Queerbaiting (and Why Xena Isn't!)

This week on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST, queer fans deserve better! Before Vera, Katie, and Livy embark on S5, we’re talking about Queerbaiting (and Why Xena Isn’t), the topic chosen by patrons in our Patreon poll. From Supernatural to Supergirl, Rizzoli & Isles to Sherlock, Once Upon A Time to The 100, we examine how creators sour their relationships with fans via manipulative advertising, false promises, recriminations, insults, and other harmful and exploitative behaviors. We also look at Hannibal, a positive example of a show evolving to meet the expectations of its fanbase. Finally we go back in time to Xena, examining the context in which the show was made, the producers’ intentions, how fan desires molded the trajectory of the show, and how Xena and Gabrielle are freaking canon, y’all!

XWP Minisode 04 - "Hercules & Xena: The Animated Movie"

Come with us across the sea of time this week on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST as we tackle Hercules & Xena: The Animated Movie - The Battle for Mount Olympus! Vera, Katie, and Livy have a lot of questions about this feature length animated spectacular, and most of them can be boiled down to:"WHY?" Like, why are their faces this way? Why is Xena's hair red in splotches? Why is Gabrielle a bird? Why doesn’t anyone talk about the romantic Arthurian/Sleeping Beauty imagery and subtexty goodness of "Xena's Song?" Why are the Titans the worst? Why is this happening?? Why was this an idea???! Etc. Boom shaka laka laka boom boom, everyone!

XWP Minisode 03 - "Armageddon Now Parts 1 & 2"

This week on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST, we are DIIIIISSAAAAPPOINTED, because we're watching two episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. In this special Patron-funded episode, we discuss the Herc/Xena crossover two-parter "Armageddon Now," lamenting the fact that this key Callisto storyline had to happen on Hercules of all places. We talk about everything traumatizing that happens in Cirra, Callisto the Terminator, and how amazing it would have been if Xena and Gabrielle had followed her into the past. Then the main event: Xena the Conqueror. We break down all of the amazing lewks and talk about the scene that launched a whole genre of darkfic. The moral of this story is: stay out of barns, people!

XWP Minisode 02 - Buffus the Bacchae Slayer!

This week on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST, she saved the world a lot. No, not Xena...though she saved it too (she saved it FIRST)! But in this special episode of the podcast, Vera, Katie, and Livy are taking a break from our regular schedule to analyze the hell(mouth) out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! We mention Buffy all the time, so we felt a free-wheeling discussion of all things related to the vampire slayer and her Sunnydale crew was long overdue. We talk about our histories with the show, how our relationships with it have evolved over time, and how Buffy has changed the way we watch television. Plus: our favorite characters, episodes, Big Bads, and fab 90’s lewks! We wear the cheese, it does not wear us!

XWP Minisode 01 - New Zealand!

Welcome to our very first XWPodcast MINISODE! For each one of these we'll be exploring bigger/broader topics as related to Xena: Warrior Princess in even more glorious detail than in our regular Monday show (which means we'll be talking freely about the series as a whole, so beware of spoilers!). Today, we're traveling through the gateway to Antarctica Middle Earth Ancient Greece: New Zealand! XWP and Hercules: TLJ were on the ground floor for US-backed fantasy productions in NZ, and we can't even imagine what Xena would look like filmed anywhere else. Join Vera, Katie, and Livy as we discuss New Zealand's stunning landscape and its significance to the Xenaverse, as well as to other Hollywood-produced fantasy genre aesthetics (for example, that little trilogy based on a series of books that dropped on the scene a few years later...).
